  • CROWN DENTAL SURGERY 29th Jan 2015

Back in 1992 Crown Dental Surgery, a NHS and private family practice in Southport, had a mere 400 patients. Today their patient list is nearer 10,000, mostly through word-of-mouth recommendations. So what is the secret of their success? Jackie Dunnings and Debbie Roberts, practice owners talk about their approach.

    Our People Are The Difference
"We are fortunate to have built up a loyal staff team over the years who pride themselves on being patient-centric, listening and working with patients to help achieve their goals. Alongside our comprehensive range of care and treatment we spend a lot of our time getting to know our patients and educating them in the prevention of caries and periodontal disease."

A Positive Experience........Right From The Start

Over the years the practice has developed a reputation for treating families together with those who are especially nervous or feel intimidated by the clinical environment. Jackie and Debbie believe this approach has contributed to their success together with providing a friendly and welcoming environment for their youngest patients. We do our best to make sure the experience is as positive as possible for everyone and closely monitor feedback through quarterly surveys and a comment book.

    Knowledge Is Power

In conjunction with the highest clinical standards, the level of investment made in the team’s training and qualifications is significant. "All our team regularly attend courses to acquire the latest skills and knowledge. Our team of nurses is especially strong and alongside general nursing skills we have encouraged each to pursue their own area of special interest such as taking radiographs, applying topical fluoride or providing oral health education."

Keeping Up The Good Work Between Appointments

"We actively recommend Oral-B power brushes. Our own in-house Oral-B Triumph 9000 demonstration power brush is invaluable so patients can fine-tune their oral hygiene skills in-surgery using a mouth model. We also recommend Oral-B Pro-Expert toothpaste with its stabilised stannous fluoride content as it is scientifically proven to be superior to other pastes. We always have samples to give away and we believe the use of a good toothpaste, combined with a good toothbrush and first hand brushing instruction helps deliver enormous oral health benefits."

    A Reason To Smile

Debbie talks enthusiastically about the practice events during National Smile Week earlier this summer: "The team gave away balloons, sugar-free lollipops and stickers to patients. We also provided written dietary advice and extra oral hygiene clinics with our therapist and oral hygiene nurse. Our team are always available to go into the community to help where we can. It is just so important to embed good oral hygiene from the earliest age."

  • COCHRANE COLLABORATION CONFIRMS SUPERIORITY OF OSCILLATING-ROTATING POWER BRUSH TECHNOLOGY OVER MANUAL BRUSHING 10th Jul 2014

Systematic, independent reviews validate the efficacy and safety of oscillating-rotating power brush technology

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – July 10, 2014 – For the third consecutive time, the independent, not-for-profit Cochrane Collaboration has concluded that oscillating-rotating technology – used in Oral-B power toothbrushes – is the only type of power brush consistently proven to reduce more plaque and gingivitis versus manual brushing in the short and long term. This outcome was derived from a larger study that concluded power brushes outperform manual toothbrushing.*

“This is an important conclusion that will help consumers and professionals make better oral care choices” said Dr. Paul Warren, vice president, Professional and Scientific Relations at Procter & Gamble.   “Consumers and some professionals may be skeptical about the benefits and safety of power brushes.  An independent confirmation of the effectiveness of Power and specifically oscillating-rotating brushes adds to Oral-B’s own evidence that consumers can benefit by shifting from a manual to an oscillating-rotating power brush.”

The conclusions of this most recent report, published in June 2014, were derived from reviews of 56 studies published from 1964 to 2011 and included no less than seven types of power brush technologies, based on brush head movement.  Over 50 percent of the studies reviewed, focused on oscillating-rotating technology, reinforcing the robustness of Oral-B’s body of scientific evidence versus other power brushing technologies.

Additional findings from the report demonstrated that none of the six other power brush technologies considered, consistently show significant effects across both outcomes and points in time. Interestingly, the authors concluded that side-to-side power brushes (typically marketed as ‘Sonic’ by manufacturers) demonstrated “no significant difference versus manual brushing on plaque or gingivitis reduction in the short or long term.” These results echoed those in the 2003 and 2005 reviews, which reveal that oscillating-rotating power toothbrushes, like those produced by Oral-B, are the only ones proven to consistently outperform manual toothbrushes in reducing plaque and gingivitis.

The authors also considered evidence regarding the safety of power toothbrushes and found no apparent relationship between the use of power toothbrushes and soft tissue trauma. “Oral-B is always trying to find the best solutions to meet patients’ needs,” said Dr. Paul Warren. “The results of these studies provide dental professionals and patients the highest level of evidence to make informed decisions about selecting the appropriate toothbrush to maintain good oral health.”

The Cochrane Collaboration is an international, independent, not-for-profit organization staffed by a volunteer network of health practitioners, researchers, patient advocates and others. It produces high-quality, relevant and up-to-date synthesized research evidence that is free from commercial sponsorship and other conflicts of interest to assist in the educated decisions patients and professionals make on product purchasing and promotion. Its work is internationally recognized as the benchmark for high quality information about the effectiveness of health care.
