Dr. Marina Harris
Marina graduated as a Dental Hygienist from the Royal Air Force Institute of Dental Health and Training and has vast experience within General Dental Practice and more recently in the field of dental education. Alongside her practice and teaching career, Marina studied and gained a Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences, a Master of Laws in Legal Aspects of Medical Practice and the Post Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
Marina is a keen advocate for the use of Dental Care Professionals in the field of research and has had papers published in the journals Oral Health and Dental Management; the Annual Clinical Journal of Dental Health; Dental Health; and the British Dental Journal. Her current PhD research field is exploring stress and well-being in dental hygienists and therapists. Marina has been an active member of BSDHT at regional and national level and has held the posts of Regional Group Treasurer, Honorary Treasurer, and President.
Professor Michael Lewis
Professor Michael Lewis is Professor of Oral Medicine, Cardiff University. He served as Dean of the School of Dentistry at Cardiff University from 2010-2017. He is also past Dean of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow and Director of the Clinical Board for Dentistry, Cardiff & Vale University Health Board.
Professor Lewis has published over 200 scientific articles and co-authored six medical textbooks. He has delivered more than 600 postgraduate lectures worldwide. In addition, he has been President of the British Society for Oral Medicine and President of the British Society for Oral & Dental Research.
Claire McCarthy teaches Periodontology & Implant Dentistry at NYU in New York where she is adjunct professor and course coordinator since 2014. She graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2000 and has 24 years clinical, teaching and research experience and has held a variety of faculty posts at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Periodontology & as well as Dental Hygiene in the UK and the US. She is former course coordinator of the BDS year 2 periodontology programme at King’s College London. She completed a master’s degree in Higher Education in 2007 and is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Claire is a contributing author of a recent textbook, treats patients in private practice, teaches hands perio courses and she is undertaking a PhD at King's College London.
Diane Rochford RDH, BSc (Hons)
Diane began her career in dentistry as a dental nurse before qualifying as a dental hygienist at Guys Hospital, London, in March 1996. Joining Dr. Linda Greenwall’s team in September 1996 where she continues to work as an extended duties dental hygienist in the practice. Since 2008, Diane has been teaching with Dr. Greenwall on her dental bleaching courses in the UK and overseas, before teaching her own one-day theory and hands-on courses specifically for dental hygienists and dental therapists since 2010. Alongside teaching, Diane has also written and published articles for DH&T, Private Dentistry, Smile journal, Dental Health, Preventive Dental Journal.
Diane further her studies and completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Dental Studies at UCLAN in 2016, she is also an active member of BSDHT, and has been North West Regional Group Representative on Council, President Elect and now serving as BSDHT President.
Starting her career in Dentistry as a Dental Nurse, Sally went on to train as a Dental Hygienist at King’s College, London in 1995 and in 2002 gained the Royal College of Surgeons Diploma in Dental Therapy at the University of Manchester. Sally has worked as an undergraduate Dental Hygiene Tutor at King’s College London and also at The University of Manchester on the BSc Oral Health Science Degree Course. Her Clinical skills developed over the years working in NHS Community Dental Clinics, General and Specialist Practice as a Clinical Dental Hygienist and Therapist.
Sally has worked as a Dental Therapist Foundation Scheme Supervisor. A consultant to the Dental Trade Industry, she has worked closely in the development of equipment aimed at DCP markets and has been selected as a key opinion leader (KOL) by many industry leading companies. Sally has lectured throughout the UK and Europe presenting to her peers and other dental team members. A member of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) since qualifying, she has held posts as a Regional Honorary Treasurer, Chair, Regional Representative on National Council, Executive Committee Member, Director of the Society, President Elect and became BSDHT President between 2010 and 2012.
Sally was awarded an Ambassador Award by the Heart Your Smile Charity for 2 years running for “Changing the Public’s Perception of Dentistry”. She has also been involved with significant fund raising projects in Dentistry and has travelled to Africa and the Lesvos Refugee Camps to provide humanitarian work helping provide emergency dental relief treatment as part of a group. Sally has written for a variety of dental publications.
Sally is a member of the British Society of Periodontology. Sally is Swiss Dental Academy Trainer and has presented on behalf of the Academy in the UK and Europe. Currently Sally shares her time between General Dental Practice and speaking and working as a KOL within the Dental Industry. She is the Honorary Chair of her local BSDHT Regional Group and helps to quality assure the ECPD provided by BSDHT for its members and for P&G.
Dr. Jeanie Suvan DipDH, MSc, CRA, FHEA, PhD
Jeanie was awarded a Diploma in Dental Hygiene by University of Alberta, Canada, followed by further education in Applied Science at University of Calgary. Subsequent to clinical practice and teaching in Canada, she worked in the Department of Periodontology, University of Bern, Switzerland. Over the past years, Jeanie has been involved in patient care, teaching and the conduct of clinical research at UCL Eastman Dental Institute in periodontology. After being awarded an MSc Degree from the University of Oxford in Evidence Based Healthcare in 2005, she completed a PhD in Clinical Dentistry at UCL investigating the association between obesity and periodontitis. In addition to her responsibilities in the Unit of Periodontology, she is currently director of the recently established MSc in Dental Hygiene on-line programme at UCL Eastman Dental Institute.
Fiona qualified as a Dental Hygienist from Manchester Dental Hospital in 1993 and as a Dental Therapist in 1999 from Liverpool University Dental Hospital and in 2013 gained her MSc in Medical Education from Cardiff University. She currently works in a busy NHS Practice, as DPSU Lead and North Wales Regional Lead for Health Education and Improvement Wales and at Bangor University as Project Specialist establishing the All Wales faculty for Dental Care Professionals.
She is an Education Associate for the GDC and an Examiner for the RCS Edinburgh and a past President of the British Association of Dental Therapists. She has been fortunate to work as dental therapist in practice, in hospital, the community dental service and in personal dental service and has an interest in treating anxious patients with Inhalation Sedation. She has been award two Oral and Dental Research Trust DCP Awards, in 2013 and 2015. She is currently carrying out Health Service Research at Bangor University for her PhD and working on the proposal for the use of exemptions in medicines legislation by dental hygienists and dental therapists across the United Kingdom. Fiona is a Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Trainers at the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.
